Ivory

Between the 16th and 18th centuries, ivory became a popular modeling medium to demonstrate the muscular structure and the location of major internal organs. During the Renaissance, these objects were initially displayed as an emblem of memento mori and were slowly adapted for teaching purposes. Even before the Renaissance, ivory, bronze, and other materials were used to train students to identify the points of acupuncture in China and Japan. (reference)
